Once upon a holler in the misty hills of Appalachia, there lived a legendary shad known far and wide as Needlebutt. Folk swore he was born when the river winked at the moon, for he was no ordinary fish. Needlebutt was but a wee creature, a mere two inches long, but his tail could prick the toughest of boots and tickle the tallest of tales. Old Jed, the wisest of the creek-side folks, claimed he once saw Needlebutt chase off a catfish thrice his size with naught but a flick of that sharp rear end. And so, to this day, when the moon dances on the water and tales are spun by the firelight, the legend of Needlebutt swims on in the hearts of mountain folk.
