The frame is used to accurately set the azimuth. To take an azimuth reading, align the long side of the compass with your landmark, rotate the dial capsule until the magnetic North arrow aligns with the North marking on the dial. The numerical azimuth value is then read at the mark on the end of the frame facing the landmark.
